Children are beautiful gifts from Allah, as Muslim Parents, Allah bestowed us the responsibility to raise our kids according to Islamic doctrines. Part of our responsibility is to teach them the act of being grateful. Gratitude is the act of being grateful for whatever help we receive from other people and most importantly being grateful to Allah.

In our recent world, many kids struggle to show gratitude to fellow human being, not because they don’t want or see the need to but because they weren’t trained to. Hence they they see it as a difficult act.
Quick question; how can we imbibe this act in our kids such that they do it effortlessly? (if you have any response to this , kindly share with us in the comments)
Often times we might notice that our Kids complain about food, homework, where they sleep, their clothes, shoes and many more. As Muslim Parent, it is our duty to train them to show gratitude always. Here are few ways to show gratitude in Islam.
BE THEIR ROLE MODEL:
Let your child learn the act of being grateful from you. Always display the act of gratitude when necessary: (when you receive a gift for yourself, when someone eases your task, When you send them on errands and they obey you……) show gratitude by thanking them. This is the easiest way to make our kids learn from us. Remember!! Our kids will watch and imitate us. Importantly make Alhamdulillah( All thanks to Allah) your favorite word.
EDUCATE THEM ABOUT ALLAHS’ COMMAND ON GRATITUDE IN ISLAM:
Read different surahs that speaks about gratitude to them in the Qur’an and encourage them to act by it. “Allah said in Suratul Ibrahim, “If you are grateful to me, I am going to give you more, but if you are ungrateful my punishment is severe”. Allah loves people that are grateful to him. Create a gratitude section as part of your daily Dua routine where each member of your Family give thanks to Allah and state what they are grateful for.
Some of the verses includes:
“When Allah brought you out of your mother’s womb, you were empty of knowledge. But he gave you eyes and ears and hearts, in order that you may give thanks to him.” (16:78).
“…If you give thanks, I will give you more…” (14:7)
“…Soon We will reward the Thankful.” (3:145)
“We enjoined on man to recognize the rights of his parents. His mother bore him in her womb with weakness upon weakness and his weaning took two years. Give thanks to Me and to your parents. All things will return to Me.” (31:14).
TEACH THEM WHAT PROPHET MUHAMMED (S.A.W) SAID ABOUT GRATITUDE IN ISLAM:
As Muslims, we should live our lives by following the sayings, teachings and actions of Prophet Muhammed (S.A.W) There are wholesome hadiths of prophet Muhammad(S.A.W) that teaches us about gratitude in Islam. Teach them these hadiths and their meaning. Some of hadiths includes :
“Whoever does not thank the people does not thank Allah.” (Hadith in Abu Dawud)
“…Whoever does a favor for you or an act of kindness, then repay him in a similar manner. But if you cannot find that which you can reward him with, then supplicate God for him continuously, until you think you have repaid him.” (Hadith in Ahmad)
“Whoever among you wakes up secure in his property, healthy in his body, and he has his food for the day, it is as if he were given the entire world.” (Hadith in Tirmidhi)
TEACH THEM THE NEED TO SHOW GRATITUDE:
Admonish your kids often, show them examples of people that do not have the gifts and privileges’ they have. Prophet Muhammed (S.A.W) said “When one of you sees another who is superior to him in point of wealth and creation, let him look to him who is below him. That is more proper that you hold not in contempt the favor of God towards you.” (Hadith in Bukhari, Muslim)
Our blogs are intended to spread knowledge amongst Muslim Parents who aims to raise their kids in the way of Islam. We hope you find the above tips beneficial.
